INTERLIBRARY LOAN (ILL)
[ILL Policies] [ILL Request Forms] [Online ILL Requests]
The Interlibrary Loan Service responds to requests from UIW faculty and students “in good standing” to borrow books and copies of periodical articles that are not held in the UIW resource collection. Requests of qualified borrowers are placed directly through the online form (accessed throughout the online catalog) and are subject to approval by the Interlibrary Loan Department for submission onto the network. Interlibrary Loan Service also receives numerous requests from external patrons all over Texas and the United States who wish to borrow books and copies of articles from UIW periodicals. Interlibrary Loan services are managed by the Library Administrative Secretary.
INTERLIBRARY LOAN POLICIES
University of the Incarnate Word faculty and currently enrolled students in good standing may request materials not owned by the Library but which are available at other libraries. Interlibrary Loan requests for qualified borrowers may be placed direct through the online library catalog (as shown on the links below) and are subject to the ILL department's approval. The Library Administrative Secretary processes interlibrary Loan requests. Inquiries on the status of a request should be addressed to the Administrative Secretary in the Library Dean's office in Room 214 of the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Library building or by telephone at 210/829-3838.
LENDING CONDITIONS:
Lending conditions are established by the Interlibrary Loan Code of the American Library Association (copies available upon request) and by regulations established by individual libraries. Certain types of materials such as reference books, entire issues of journals, dissertations or theses, rare books or manuscripts, usually cannot be borrowed. The University of the Incarnate Word library does not borrow items listed in its holdings catalogs, unless the item is lost. Items requested which are checked out will be promptly recalled or placed on hold.
FEES:
Some libraries charge a processing fee for book loans or copies of journal articles. While UIW does not charge, the requester is responsible for paying any fees assessed by the lending library for interlibrary loan services. If a price limit is NOT indicated on the Interlibrary Loan Form the library assumes requester is not willing to pay and will not accept materials from a lending library that charges.
DURATIONS OF LOANS:
Items borrowed on Interlibrary Loan must be returned to the Circulation Desk at the University of the Incarnate Word Library on or before the due date indicated on the material. MATERIALS BORROWED THROUGH ILL ARE USUALLY NOT RENEWABLE, but renewal requests may be considered on a case basis by the lending library. Please call 829-3838 for any questions regarding Interlibrary Loan.
COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS:
Under the guidelines of the 1978 Copyright Law, during one calendar year, a library may request photocopies of up to five journal articles from the last five years of publication of a journal title without infringing on the law. Requests above that number are subject to publisher approval or payment of copyright fees [charges vary per article].
DISSERTATIONS AND THESES:
Most American (and, recently, British) universities participate in the reproduction of theses and dissertations sponsored by the University Microfilms International (UMI) Program. For information on how to order a copy of a thesis or dissertation from UMI, call UMI at 1(800) 521-0600.
